#VIPeek: Steak & Cake @SullivansSteak. It’s a thing.
It’s true. Sullivan’s Steakhouse has a Steak & Cake (that’s cake of the crab variety) April special that includes a filet, a crab cake and your choice of salad for just $39. It’s also true that they let me eat their deliciousness for freelast week so I could tell you about it firsthand. Happy to be of service, as usual.
Sullivan’s is a steakhouse-steakhouse. It’s what you would expect: dark woods, dark wines and just dark, as in, dimly lit. So my appologies for the shittay pictures. I had to lighten them in post and that’s never a good thing. But I don’t flash. I have my standards.
It had been a long week. This cocktail (called a Knockout) was a welcome, welcome treat.
These cheesesteak eggrolls were tasty, in a guilty pleasure sort of way.
Here’s another shot of their crabcake, which was updated with a southwestern sauce, basil and the largest lump pieces you can get.
I really enjoyed the seared tuna appetizer, served with English mustard.
The caesar was standard, just like a steakhouse caesar should be.
I got to try my neighbor’s seabass and I must say it made me want to cheat on my filet.
Finally, we were told that dessert awaited us in the bar. “The bar” is not just a steakhouse bar. It’s called Ringside, and while I thought the whole idea was lame at first, the wedding-jam-style band that played above the bartenders slinging drinks was pretty damn lively and fun. A few more knockout martinis and I would have been dancing. If I wasn’t so full of steakhouse foods, of course. The desserts were good but not great, with something for everyone. The standards were there, including vanilla bean créme brulee and New York-style cheesecake, and then some slightly more unique sweets including a warm chocolate brownie cake, a bananas foster bread pudding, and a peanut butter black bottom pie. That last one won the foodbitch award of the night.
All in all, Sullivan’s serves classic steakhouse fare with some updates for today. It’s in Plano, and it feels at home there. But if you’re after a steakhouse meal for business or family, it’s a solid choice. And the Steak & Cake? It’s a good deal.
DISCLOSURE: The steak, cake, and everything else was FREE. I tipped my valet though.
