Description

As you might expect, I’m not a huge fried food person. I dont’ go crazy at the fair, eating everything in sight, and I rarely indulge in fried food at restaurants, because I generally prefer other, less pedestrian methods of preparation (nose in air).

But Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day, perhaps the greatest national holiday of in the national state of Texas, has arrived. And damn if it doesn’t make me want to eat some steak that’s been chicken fried.

Today, while I was chatting with Nadia G. of Bitchin’ Kitchen on The Cooking Channel (#HUMBLEBRAG), I mentioned our little fried holiday. That’s when her producer asked me, “What’s chicken fried steak?” Trying to hide my consternation I described it to him, and he got the picture, but I think it’s odd that there are these foods that people here eat all the dang time, and yet there are people all over the world who have no effing clue what we’re talking about. Also, I had wine at lunch. Can you tell? Blah, blah, blah…

Anyway! Head over to City of Ate and read what some of the staff and some of our friends consider to be the best chicken fried steak in town. My favorite is featured in the picture at left; the surprisingly gluten free, grass fed chicken fried steak with jalapeƱo gravy at Company Cafe. Highly recommended. I’ll have to check out Matt’s next…

Happy Chicken Fried Steak Day, Texas! Yeeeehaw!
